Zarautz, Spain

Zarautz is one of Spain’s most beautiful surfing locations with steady waves. The sandy beach stretches out over 2 kilometers and counts several sandbanks which makes it an ideal spot for both beginning and experienced surfers. You can stroll on the boardwalk, and whether you have a drink on one of the cozy terraces, sit on a bench overlooking the beach, or enjoy an ice-cream or a hamburger in one of the many restaurants, you will always be able to watch the surfers showing their tricks. Zarautz is obviously the European surf mecca par excellence!

But the center of town has also a lot to offer! Discover one of the many tapas bars and enjoy its amazing pintxos, leave the cerveza once for what it is and try instead a sidra or txakoli, or go loose in one of the surf shops and give yourself a complete surf makeover!

Zarautz is the ideal base camp for anyone who likes to broaden his horizons. This small town located in the heart of the Basque Country, offers lots of opportunities for nature and culture lovers, but also for shopping addicts and party animals. The public transport connects the cities with the surrounding villages. So, if one day you get up in the morning with a magnificent view on a … totally flat ocean… No problem! Take a day off and visit the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, go shopping in San Sebastian and end the evening with a lovely dinner in one of the asadores of Getaria.

Health

Spain has an excellent health-care system.

Tap water is generally safe to drink in Spain, although there are exceptions (Ibiza among them). If you are in any doubt, ask, ¿Es potable el agua (del grifo)? (Is the (tap) water drinkable?). Do not drink water from rivers or lakes as it may contain bacteria or viruses that can cause diarrhoea or vomiting.

Climate

Zarautz water temperatures peak in the range 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F) on around the 10th of August and are at their lowest on about the 1st of March, at 12°C. Zarautz water temperatures are maximum in early to mid August. Surfers should use a 2mm long sleeve shorty or a 3/2mm spring wetsuit if the wind is up. The lowest water temperatures at Zarautz at the beginning of March are ideally suited to a 4/3mm wetsuit + 3mm boots, although a 5/3mm wetsuit may be preferable for longer sessions and cold windy days.

Drinking & nightlife

Though quieter outside of summer, there are several bars in town that get crowded most evenings in warmer weather. Most of the action is at spots on the beachfront, or near Musika Plaza in the old town.
