carcans-plage, France

Carcans is the name given to a group of places at the southern end of the large lake (the ‘Lac d’Hourtin et de Carcans’) a few kilometres north of Lacanau Ocean on the Medoc peninsula. These places include Carcans Plage (the Atlantic sea resort), Carcans itself (a traditional town a few kilometres inland from the coast) and Maubuisson, a small town and resort at the southern edge of the lake.

It is the Atlantic beach, which is sandy and several kilometres long, that is the principal attraction for visitors here to Carcans. It is a very high quality beach backed by substantial sand dunes and popular with surfers. Carcans is one of our favourite beaches along this stretch of coast.

Carcans Plage resort, clustered just behind the beach, is a typical ‘holiday resort’, pleasant for a break from the beach and with cafes and shops all geared to tourism but no building or monuments of historical interest.

Come and join us this summer at camping de l’Océan!

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE GIRONDE

The Gironde is difficult to describe without using superlatives. It’s the largest department of France with a coastline forming part of Europe’s longest beach - the Cote d’Argent. Climb Dune du Pilat, at over 100m Europe’s highest sand dune.

Bordeaux has plenty to offer in terms of historic monuments to visit, festivals to enjoy, markets to stroll through. Away from the city, Atlantic surfing beaches like Lacanau, which holds world professional events and festivals and our own Carcans-plage, are a magnet for watersports enthusiasts. Behind pine fringed dunes shimmer freshwater lakes with child-friendly beaches and calmer waters ideal for sailing and windsurfing. The shores of Lac Hourtin-Carcans - France’s longest freshwater lake - offer great stretches of wilderness and quieter holiday and fishing villages.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We can imagine you still have questions left about your surf adventure. Please look into our frequently asked questions. If you don't find the answer here, feel free to always get in touch with us. We do our best to help you as soon as possible.

Climate

Classified as having an ‘oceanic climate’ due to its situation on the west coast of France the Bordeaux area actually tends to enjoy warmer summers and milder winters than its other oceanic climate counterparts. In actuality it can feel more like a Mediterranean climate, although a substantial amount of rainfall during the summer the months prevents it from being classified as such.

Temperatures

Temperatures are typically between 10 and 30°C in the Gironde and in the warmest summer months of July and August the average maximum temperature is about 27°C. Although temperatures can reach a high of 39-40°C, high temperatures in the summer exceed 31°C only one day out of 10.

Getting there

Bordeaux is the main transport hub for the region, with an international airport and excellent rail and bus links (www.rome2rio.com).

Health

France is a healthy place, so your main risks are likely to be sunburn, foot blisters, insect bites and mild stomach problems from eating and drinking with too much.

Tap water: Some fountains in villages and towns also spout drinking water – ‘eau potable’ means ‘drinking water’, ‘non potable’ means undrinkable.

Eating

Foodies will be in seventh heaven in the Lower Atlantic Coast. Main city Bordeaux cooks up excellent dining in all budgets, cheap-as-chips food trucks and triple Michelin-starred restaurants included. Being by the sea, seafood and shellfish – especially oysters – are abundant everywhere and among the finest in France.
